Jacob "Jake" Dugas was diagnosed with Cervical Chordoma Cancer at the age of 18. A tumor was found in his neck that was wrapped around his spinal cord. Because of the complexity of the tumor, doctors were unsuccessful in removing it entirely. For the next six years Jacob underwent several risky operations and numerous radiation treatments. Jake's struggle ended on May 21, 2002 when the cancer spread to his lungs.
Jake was very courageous. Even though he lived with severe pain on a daily basis, Jake continued to do what he loved most in his life... FISH. Jake's determination, strong will and exceptional performance paid off at the Bass Master Central Open in 2001. He fished the Angler's Choice Circuit and was the 2001 Angler of the Year. Jake also continued to pursue his educational goals and received his bachelor's degree from LSU in wildlife and fisheries.
As you know, Jacob “Jake” Dugas courageously fought cancer, but finally succumbed to this awful disease in 2002. His courageousness continued even though he was in severe pain. Today he would probably be a Bass Master top contender. Because he was such a great guy, his memory lives on.
The Jacob Dugas Annual Tournament is still going strong because of your continued support.
Financial and emotional costs from cancer are overwhelming for families with someone going through treatment. The high costs of a college education should not be another challenge for these unfortunate, yet extraordinary, young adults faced with debilitating and painful cancer. The Jacob M. Dugas Foundation supports the American Cancer Society College Scholarship Program which offers young cancer survivors a chance to pursue a higher education. Last year the foundation donated $10,000 to the Scholarship Fund. This year our goal is to grow that amount by 50%. Your contribution will help make that possible. Please help give the gift of a future by supporting the 9th Annual Jacob Dugas Memorial Bass Tournament on September 25, 2010.
